Speech

This week we have been practicing speeches. Our teacher wanted the specch to be atlest 2 min and 30 seconds my speech was 2 min 35 seconds. Here is my speech I hope you like it.

Dear world,

This planet is very dirty with lots of rubbish everywhere that’s why if you have rubbish, put it in the bin, putting rubbish in the bin helps the environment. By helping the environment you can put rubbish in the recycle bin or the rubbish bin. The rubbish can fly thousands of meters and sometimes it makes it to the ocean. By rubbish filling the ocean “pollution” comes in and pollution to the sea animals can cause lots of deaths and even extinction. Rubbish such as plastic in the ocean can cause deaths and statistics say 700 species such as turtles, fish, and lots of more marine life could go extinct because of it.

For example here's a list of the animals that are dying from our plastic trash sea turtles, Sea birds, Sea Lions, Seals, Fish, whales, and dolphins. These animals are suffering from our plastic and rubbish being put in the sea.  When these animals die, the life in the sea would no longer be magical and attracting it would be plain and boring. Rubbish is getting tangled up in the turtles mouths and shell causing them to die a slow sad death or a tough time for the turtles.

We throw out a whopping 8 billion worth of food waste every year, 8 billion is a really big number in food. And statistics show that an estimated 14 billion pounds of trash - most of it is plastic, which means that 14 billion pounds of trash is being dumped into the ocean every year. Plastic takes thousands of years to decompose in the ocean, which means a lot of plastic from thousands and thousands of years ago that plastic could still be floating around somewhere in the ocean and that also means that fish and other kinds of sea life are dying every day from our plastic trash.

This plastic trash that we have been polluting has been dating back to the 1960's and when plastic has been in the sea in 1960 it still hasn't decomposed till this day.

And how would you feel if your home was being polluted? I know that I would feel disgusted, that's why we all need to step up and save this planet so it can be habitable once again.

Be a part of the solution, not a part of the pollution...

EOCT Activites

Adrenaline forest a moment in time:

As I swing through the forest and the trees I can smell the refreshing wood, and air. I see lots of branches and ongoing tree lines in the distance. The feel of the rope forcing me down gives the sensation of a falling effect. When I clip the rope back on a boost of adrenaline fills my body as I swing back into action.

Compass

Today we used a co/mpass to find North East West and South. It is quite hard to find the directions because you have to turn your hand in awkward directions and it hurts a wee bit as well.

The first compass made was by William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin

Directions - NESW - Never Eat Soggy Weet-bix

One thing that affects a compass reading correctly? Wristwatches,

Keys, Tables with metal legs, steels or screws, Mobile telephones.

Early Polynesian Navigation

This week we have been learning about the early Polynesian navigation. They used lots of things to navigate the world.

Early Polynesian Navigation

Have you ever seen a Polynesian voyager or wayfinder? The Polynesian wayfinders navagated with clouds, water or swells, birds, the sun was their compass, and stars. The voyagers were relying on canoes to guide them to where they wanted to go. When they knew when to go it was when the sun rose in the east and west.

Sunset and Sunrise made it possible to see ocean swells.

The wayfinders look at swells when the suns out. That made it possible to navigate the world.

The wayfinders navigated the pacific ocean using sun + moon, fish, clouds, ocean swells, and birds.

Birds were near land as they had a 190km range of flight pattern and flew back to shore.

Clouds reflected islands or lagoons. Big groups of clouds could tell their direction. They told where there were islands.

The wayfinders used the sun to tell them when to find the ocean swells, they hunt and find swells when the sun comes up in the east, and when it goes down in the west. They know when to not navigate and rest. They also used clouds, birds, ocean swells, and stars.

Communication Challenge

This week we have been doing a challenge called, the communication challenge. For this we had to use hexadecimal. One of the buddy's had to go down to the end of the field and tell the people 100 meters down at the other end of the field, actions about the code.

This didn't work well because it was hard to say the actions to make it the right word.

We could make some easier actions next time, so the other people could see it better.

Value for money shopping

Today we did a Value Shopping task. We had a budget of $50 our things we had to by were

1. Toothpaste
2. Shampoo / conditioner
3.Eggs
4.Bacon
5.Milk

I tried to get my lowest price and the lowest I could find and get down to was $ 13.48.

The hard part about this was finding the lowest prices you could get down to.

And the easy part was using the online shop because you can just type in the food / drink you want and it will come up with the picture and the price of the food and drink.

Median, Mean, Mode

This week we have been learning about Median, Mean, Mode.

Definition Median: So when there is a bunch of numbers you have to fin the median - (middle) to see the Median you have to count each numbers of ether side of the median number and see if there is the same amount of numbers on each side.

e.g: 1 2 4 2 8 9 0 = 2 because there is the same amount of numbers on each side

Mode definition: So if there is a 7 two times in a number sequence and there is no other double up of a number 7 will be your mode.

e.g: 1 2 7 4 7 8 it would be 7  because there is a double up of it

Mean definition: To find out the mean of the number sequence you have to add, and divided the numbers until you get the answer.

e.g: 4 5 2 so first you add the numbers 4 + 5 + 3 =12 then you dived 12 by 3 times because there are three numbers to add up so 12 / 3 = 4 because 4 x 3 = 12

Badge Of Honour

Matariki

Matariki is a legend and a Moari tradition.
He appears at 16 of june all the way  to 30th of June.
To celebrate this tradition we go down to the beach and see the 7 stars of Matariki.
We can also do a hangi down there for the food.
Most people have a feast down at the beach.
Which could also be a buried hangi or any other type of food.
And spending time with family and friends.

In Maori today we had to explain something that you do in the Moari.
Matariki tradition.
I came up with the time of the tradition and what happens at Matriki time.
